The widening of Victoria is a great opportunity to improve the overall trail linkage for this area, enabling us to get into Ajax more safely and travel westward. If you've never riden towards Lynde Shores Conservation area on your bike, its probably because of the poor linkage but I received confirmation that this stretch has been designed with better viewing platforms, designated trail paralleling the road. (nice renderings available on the Regions website under Transportation).
I received a note from the Mayors office in Ajax with regards to the Regional trail development and lack of overall support for them. In Whitby the waterfront trail is wonderful but the north south trails are poorly marked or travel on the existing roadways (Henry Street is a prime example). Mayor Parish is an avid cyclist and a huge supporter of this initiative, and although I'm not as avid, I enjoy riding and encourage my kids to ride too for getting to and from places versus me driving!
Here's the email and if you want the pdf file, send me a pm and I'll forward it.

Subject: Regional Cycling Study
On June 20, 2007, Regional Council endorsed the Joint Commissioners' Report on the Status of the Regional Cycling Plan Study. The Report estimated the cost of implementing a Regional Cycling Network to be $103 million. While the allocation of the funding would be split between the Region and area municipalities, the report concludes that a Business Case analysis is required to determine the financing of the Plan in light of the Region's budgetary constraints.

The Town of Ajax has prepared its own report to provide the Region with the Town's position on the Regional Cycling Plan and suggest priorities and financing options for the Plan. The report will be presented to the General Government Committee on Oct. 4. Once the report is approved by Council on Oct. 9 - it will be forwarded to the Region for consideration.

If you agree with the Town's position, we encourage you to send a letter of support or e-mail to the Region's Clerk's Office at

605 Rossland Road East, Box 623, Whitby L1N 6A3
clerks@region.durham.on.ca

or to

Mayor Steve Parish at
65 Harwood Ave. S., Ajax ON L1S 2H9
steve.parish@townofajax.com

Please feel free to forward this e-mail to your cycling contacts.

Thanks
