I say, we take over the baseball diamond, from Oct 15th till April 1st. When the town sees how popular it is, they will give us an area,,,,just to protect the diamond. How about this Saturday morning at 10, to get the feel of it???????
They can only give you a fine if they know who you are. Since it's only a bylaw infraction,,,,they'd have to follow me home to figure out who I was, since this is a form of protest, for a leash free park,,,,
Brian,
I would question the wisdom of such protest right beside the playground - the optics are just brutal on that one. As for taking over the school board land, I'm all for it as long as it's properly secured (i.e. fenced) and maintained.

Brian,
I appreciate your sense of humor. I'm just not sure if that's the best way to get going on this. If you guys want to have an impact, why don't you do your little protest a front of the City Hall? You need allies in the community to pull something like this off and some people just don't like unleashed dogs close to their children, no matter how "friendly" or "small" they are (I know, it's just crazy...). You will have enough on your hands convincing the city without alienating a significant part of the population.
I don't think a bylaw officer with his/her summons pad would make many children have nightmares, or cause any one to shake uncontrollably,,,but on the other hand, this is Whitby,,,,,who knows.
I was being a little sarcatic anyway,,,,,and I doubt anyone, including a bylaw officer, will be there tomorrow.
We can all rest assured that we will all be safe with our morning coffee, tomorrow.
George,
Is it the same place with huge signs that plead "Keep your dog on leash"? My understanding is that mental patients (and they do use the grounds) and dogs don't mix very well...
I have the perfect place for a off dog park ....we take our dogs there everyday and they run around like crazy! and there are no kids there to worry about, it's right at the bottom of Gordon st...... WMHC
LOL. One could easily argue that mental patients don't mix well with anyone! Given the amount of goose poop on those grounds a little doggy doo doo might give the patients their daily dose of variety...

Dogs may be therapeutic if they are brought on leash to the hospital. SOME (certainly not all) patient may enjoy petting them in that controlled environment. I would not consider dogs (some of them quite large) running lose very calming. I also don't buy Jabber's argument that the place is so full of crap from geese that some extra from his dog wouldn't matter. It's a by-law. Don't like it? Call your representatives and complain how come your dog can't run lose on mental hospital's property. I'm sure the "extra crap doesn't matter" argument will swiftly sway them. Unless they ask why you are one of those people that don't clean up after their dogs.
aren't dogs supposed to be therapeutic? I've seen many hospitals, retirements homes, etc asking for volunteers to bring pets in to let the patients see them and pet them.... a piece of land at WMHC would be ideal (enclosed of course!) and just think of the joy some patients could get by looking out their window and seeing a bunch of dogs playing freely.... most times the patients are friendly enough when I walk by to get to the lakefront trail and always call out to my dog.... or want to pet him.
We do go to the Ajax off lease park quite regularly (sometimes daily).. but would be nice to be able to walk somewhere versus factoring in a 30 mins commute to and from Ajax....
Actually Risky, I don't have a dog nor do I want one. Incredibly high maintenance creatures for what I percieve you get in return... But, if there were to be a location in South Whitby at which dogs could be off the leash I would think that the WMHC would be perfect. With some sort of fencing of course. And given the already huge amount of goose poop there I don't think a bit of doggy poop (some dog owners still refuse to scoop the poop!) would increase the yuck factor by too much.

Bratz didn't suggest the dogs run freely - he said in an enclosed area. I agree there is nothing more heartwarming than seeing dogs having fun and if the patients don't want to look then they don't have to. They can go to some other part of the prime real estate they live on and smoke their disgusting cigarettes leaving butts all over the place.
Up early in the morning for a walk(so they don't pee and pooh in the house while you're at work) in any of the four seasons; incredibly expensive food if you want your dog to be in good health; out for a walk when you get home from work (so they don't pee and pooh in the house while you sleep) in any of the four seasons; a bath once a week (so your family doesn't reek of dog); and when you go on holiday it's off the to doggy kennel (who knows how much that costs!). All so that little poochy can drool all over the house and bark at the neighbours. No thanks. Give me fish any day. At least cats clean themselves, do their duty in a specific place (inside no less) and keep you warm at night without stinking up your bed... LOL. I really hope you didn't mean the line about getting more from a dog than a human. That's pretty sad if you believe it.
On another note, I think if dog owners want a place to let their pooches of the leash (and that seems to be the case) then you should talk to Liz and see if the idea of working with the WMHC toward this goal is worth any merit.

I don't know what you percieve you get in return but I can tell you - you will get more from a dog than from any human. What two legged creature do you know that loves you unconditionally (unfortunately in some case no matter how badly treat them).
Maybe you should go to a dog park and see how much love and affection dogs give back in return for what we give them.
OK, I agree. It looks like I misread what you were saying. I apologize. I still think the chances of carving a fenced off area out of the WMHS is very slim.
