Kitty

I've noticed too that they sort out things that are recyclable and never take them.

They are rough with our bins too. It is like the bins are offensive to them or something. I am just tired of picking up all that they leave behind. We are close to the end of the street and everything blows down onto our yard.
Do you all really believe that this is happening on purpose? I chose not to. Having been through 2 sets of bins in three years (both lost due to wind rather than abuse) I know where you are coming from but I highly doubt this is being done on purpose. Consider how much weight each driver has to lift every single day. We may only have pickup once a week but they work 5 days a week. If I had to lift as much as they do I would be tossing the bins rather than bending to place them nicely as well.

Our nicely sorted and organized blue boxes are thrown into the middle of our driveway on a weekly basis.  This gentleman appears frustrated with his job.  I am sure he does it so that we have to get out of our cars at the end of the day.  Some small punishment for putting egg cartons or other non recycleables in there...

Silly.

People will complain about anything. These workers over the course of the week pick up thousands of Blue Boxes. If I did the same job, there is no way I would make any effort to nicely put down the box, put it neatly at the edge of the driveway so the homeowner can drive their car into the driveway, etc, etc...It would take twice as long to complete his route if this was the case.

If your worried about broken Blue Boxes, don't buy the cheap ones sold at Walmart, Canadian Tire, etc. They don't last that long. Buy the type that was originally given to us by the city...these are much more durable.
Maddog,

I think you hit the nail right on the head when you mentioned expectaions. The problem in this world today is that we have expectations for everything: driving standards, personal interactions and even the way our recycling boxes are treated. This is the modern malady in my opinion. Where it comes from is anyone's guess but I'm betting on that favourite source of all things evil the Internet! LOL. So if we all tone down our expectations a bit then perhaps they will be met or exceeded more often....

Despite sarcasm starting to go back & forth (which I recognize I too am guilty of) I wanted to say to Elizabeth thank you for responding to this.  I appreciate your involvement.  I don't have a problem if the bins are not neatly stacked beside my driveway (although I have noticed the "alternates" who work the route will do that, pleasantly exceeding my expectations there so please share that feedback as well).  I know these folks have a LOT to do each day and I'm certainly not asking for the world.  I'm simply asking for a little more respect so that I don't have to buy new boxes prematurely.

Sync & George, maybe I've missed something in your posts but is that really too much to ask?  Sync, I don't know what you do for a living.  However, George you're self employed.  Do you really think it'd be good for business if you carelessly threw your empty paint cans onto people's floors because you've had a long day & you're tired?

LOL. All this over a $5 recycling bin. I know, I know. It's the principle right? LOL again...

That's a tricky balance when we talk about expectations.  Too high and you're being unrealistic & setting yourself & everyone else up for disappointment/failure.  Too low and we might as well all be living in trees flinging poo at each other.

Every society has to have some minimum expectations.  Even animals have certain rules/expectations when dealing with one another in their societies.  So, even though it appears a few individuals in this neighborhood are quite comfortable having no expectations of our recycling folks, I'm quite comfortable with my minimum expectation that a city worker will not carelessly destroy my property while performing their duties.

good one...

Maddog, you're the best! And since you took the time to dig up these cherries I'll take the time to respond...

So, since you find it funny, where's the cut off?  The principle of expecting respectful treatment of someone else's belongings, regardless of dollar value, is no more amusing than the following Jabber quotes (provided for our LOL amusement):

"I guess being a law abiding, upstanding, family oriented example of the male version of the human species, I take offence to being grouped with the drunk/stoned/judgement impaired group of males that the actuaries tell us we are." - Why so offended if you know they're not talking about you specifically?  Me thinks thou dost protest too much.

{Jabber}
I am the one paying for it right? It doesn't matter if I know I'm not like the rest if I have to pay like the rest...

"And for the record I think it's totally irresponsible for WMHC to be offloading their smoking problem onto the Town of Whitby and the community of Whitby Shores." - The WMHC is totally irresponsible because of a couple of smokers??  A little extreme, don't you think?  LOL

{Jabber}
Have you been through the throngs over on Gordon? It's more than just a couple of smokers. Take a trip over after dinner some night while it's still relatively warm out...

"Care to share what type of car it was and what colour?" - Wow, fire up the pitch forks and torches, we're formin' a posse!  LOL

{Jabber}
Vigilante justice. My favourite flavour. I bet it would work well if instituted...

"My family regularly rides through the grounds and we have begun dealing with some very strange people over by Gordon St."  So you can be sensitive to the poor recycling guys but it's OK to call these people struggling to overcome mental problems "strange"?

{Jabber}
Have you seen some of the pople over there? They are strange. No two ways about it. And I don't think I was being sensitive to the recycling people I just wanted to try to state their position as I felt they were being bashed.

"Cat poop is nothing like the dog logs I keep finding on my lawn." It's just poo man, consider it a natural fertilizer.

{Jabber}
So if I come over and pooh on your lawn is it still just pooh? RONTLMAO.

I suppose my point of all of this is you've done your fair share of "complaining".  I suppose the difference is I didn't feel the need to try and minimize your valid concerns even though I disagree with them.

Yes I have. And for the record, one of the intended purposes of forums and blogs is exactly that: complaining and commiserating. As is sharing ideas and back-and-forthing. Pooh on my lawn, unsafe drivers, paying too much for car insurance and throngs of semi lucid smokers seem more important to me than recycling bins. But if that's what gets your knickers in a knot then so be it. And please disagree as it makes this much more fun!

Jabber.

Keep it up!

RONTLMAO: Rolling On Natural Turf Lauging My Ass Off.

Essentially rolling on the ground peeing yourself with laughter. It used to be ROTFLMAO. What's ROTLMAO?

I do what I can.  Gotta ask a question though.  "RONTLMAO"?  I know ROTLMAO ... what's the N?

Someone must have a lot of time on their hands...
You're too funny Maddog. And yes Sync, I did have a few minutes to myself...
Too funny George!
