Has anyone else noticed in the last couple of days that their basement has a foul odor. It smells sharp and rotten. We have ruled out natural gas and the cat litter. It is definitely not ammonia and we don't think it is dead animal like a mouse in the walls either.
Could it be the sewer backing because of all the melting that has happened in the last couple of days? Has anyone else noticed this and if so, how do you make it go away?
Kitty,
If you have sewer gasses coming up from the drain in your basement I'd be calling the city to see if they can come have a look. All new houses are supposed to have one way valves in the basement drains so that no backwash can come up. You may want to pour some water down the drain to "top up" the drain and hopefully stop the gas from coming up. Some water is supposed to stay in the pipe to prevent this but it's been windy lately and the pressure in your vent stack may have forced the level down. Either way check the drain your basement (it's usually by the furnace) and make sure nothing is out of the ordinary...
Jordan.
