Any news on when (and if) the Whitby hospital is going to be up and running again? There are many dialysis and long term care patients and their families struggling to make due with over-crowded conditions in neighbouring hospitals.
I heard that the facility won't be open until the Spring. And I wish they would open the emergency room at the same time. I know it's a pipe dream but it was a God send when my son was younger and had ear infections every month...
Hang in there!
Jordan.

Thanks for your thoughts Jordan, but it's actually too late for our family. After my father was evacuated during the fire he was moved to Lakeridge Health Oshawa, where he took up a critical care bed (not a long term care bed), until his death in November. The Whitby patients still at Oshawa are being cared for by the staff from Whitby, and they are working out of a make-shift nurses station which used to be a storage closet. The Drs are running back and forth between the several hospitals where their patients have been parked. No one seems to know when, or if, Whitby will be back in business. Any insight, Elizabeth Roy?
First to She Sells Seashells, My sincerest condolences to you and your family on the passing of your father.
The latest news for the Whitby Hospital is:
The Ontario Fire Marshall has imposed upgrades onto the facility.
There has been work done within the hospital, but as soon as the fire occurred the hospital lost its occupancy capabilities which in turn has created the upgrades in accordance to the building code.
So what does this mean today:
We are awaiting to hear sometime this month(January) on the updated status.
As for the patients, staff and families I do know what they are going through and am completely sympathetic. My background is healthcare; and I also sit on the Foundation Board for Whitby Hospital and the programs for patients still need to be supported; especially now.
When the update comes forward I will post the link to this forum.
Any further concerns or where you can help out please email me at roye@whitby.ca

Hello all here is the update on the Hospital.
So we have to wait until the end of March to find out what the review of the committee is before we know the timelines for the hospital.
Regards
Elizabeth Roy
Thank-you Elizabeth for following up on this subject, even though it wasn't with good news. I personally know of one other family making a daily drive to Bowmanville to visit their loved one. We were all hoping Whitby would be back in service soon, and they wouldn't have to be making such a long trek out of Whitby everyday. If it is decided not to go ahead with the required changes does anyone have any ideas on what will happen?

This is the unknown: we will have to wait for the recommendations from the advisory group that is suppose to be making their suggestions by the end of March.
In the interim the patients and families still need the support as they travel to different areas within Durham.
I will keep this site posted with news as it comes forward.
Regards
