I know many of you have seen me complain on here about the neighbouring cats and how many have decided to leave messages on my lawn and sandbox along with lingering on my porch and deck.
My frustration level has reached an all time high with OTHER PEOPLE'S PETS!! Twice now the orange cat who "resides" on Portage (I say resides losely cuz the cat appears to ALWAYS be outside) has snuck into our garage while I am parking the car or bringing recycling back in. I don't see it happen but when I go into my laundry room @ night I hear the thing meowing away.
I have called the Town and there is a program that is available. IT IS ILLEGAL FOR CATS TO BE OUTDOORS IN WHITBY!!!!! Do people know this and just not care?
Anyway - there is a safe trap available. What it does is traps the cat and then it is to be brought to the animal services department. The cat owner is then contacted. They would have to pay $300 to get their cat back and if it happened again they would be fined again and charged.
I have not yet gotten the trap but I will if the situation isn't taken care of. If anyone on here reads this and knows this particular cat owner (or any owner of an outdoor cat) please warn them because I am so tired of it. Friendly cat or not - I don't want cats hanging about or pooping on my lawns, sidewalk, driveway, sandbox, deck or IN my house (which the garage is part of). I don't think it's an unrealistic expectation!
That same cat, although super cute and friendly, got stuck in the garage of one of the houses across the street from me. He was there over night, and left a nasty brown mess all over the garage. The poor owner had to wake up and clean it before heading to work at 7:30am.
He really seems like a great cat, and my kids love seeing him, but he really does belong indoors!!!
No, most people and cat owners still seem to not be getting it. The exact same by-laws that apply to dogs also apply to cats, such as:
- Every cat and dog must be licensed! About two years ago PAW Animal Services went door to door in the entire subdivision. Even if your animal stays indoors 100% of the time.
- No cat or dog may be outside in a public area without a leash or inside a carrier.
Okay how long has this subject been going on for??? I have 2 cats [both indoors] but get let outside sometimes as well [in the backyard]. People have let out their cats since I was a little girl....they do it everywhere. Does it make it right??? No of course not but isnt there bigger things to worry about? I do however strongly agree with people leaving their cats out overnight...THAT IS CRUEL. But I dont have a problem with cats roaming free once in awhile. I have also paid for my cats licenses.
I just think if you dont want the ignorance of other people to affect your life or property go live in the country where you have zero neighbours....thats the only WAY of getting around all of this.
Cakcam,
I agree that if you want not to have to put up with others, a lonely secluded place would work well.
But there are two bigger questions:
1. Why do I have to do anything because of the ignorance of others? Wouldn't it be better if others recognized their ignorance and tried to adjust?
2. Why is it okay for cat owners to break the rules. Can you imagine the outcry and action that would be taken if dogs were given the same freedoms that cats are given?
To tie this to another thread, this is a small annoyance that people have to put up with regardless of where they live -- it's not something specific to our wonderful little community. That however, does not mean that there isn't lots of room for improvement!
Hey
yes i totally agree. People are ignorant and others shouldnt HAVE to put up with it. But we do it everyday and in every venue of our lives....ie.people taking parking spots when they know it was yours, people playing "dumb" and budding into a line, people dumping their trash where they shouldnt...I can go on forever.
As for the dogs thing...I have seen owners let their dogs run loose at the park without leashes...isnt that ignorant??? Especially on the basball field or beside the kids playground? I just think wherever you go people have the mentality that they can get away with it.....AND YOU KNOW WHAT??? 9 times out of 10 they do. Cats running loose are the least of the community's problems as there are only a handful of them....what about calling animal control...will they do anything?
Again pick your battles carefully
There's a battle going on? I don't see one...
well first of all cats get hit by cars everyday everywhere,so do squirrels and dogs and what about KIDS!!! I would much rather spend my time worrying about the jerks that speed through this community and might hit the kids then animals. Unfortunately you are never gonna get through to some pet owners...you just have to do what you can do for your own pets and get on with it.
But the whole point of me starting this thread was to say there IS something that can be done and we are going to get that trap.
If you have an outdoor cat in the Portage area or one that likes to venture far and it all of a sudden goes missing - give the Animal Services Department on Thickson Road a call and get out your cheque book!
I have a customer that likes to leave a mess in his back yard...let me know who the cat owner is that lets their cats out roaming around and I will send this guy over. LOL!!!
