Does anyone know if the city is planning on putting a proper cross-walk in between the Go Station and Iroquois Park? My husband crosses there every work day and it can be dangerous. A cross-walk might even inspire more people to walk from our area to the train rather than take their cars.
Send an email to Elizabeth Roy. If she can't do anything, she can at least post the info of someone who can.
Thjat way we can email whoever we should.
Ya,,,,but it's all politics, and they all know who to contact, so that time isn't wasted on just complaining to nobodies
So if this is a "legal" crosswalk and it is not being obeyed by motorists (we have all seen cars booting it out of the parking lot north and south. Some don't even stop at the stop sign!) then the region should make very sure it is marked much better than it is. I have always considered the lines to be a crosswalk and have been given grief by motorists more than once. The real problem lies in the fact that there are so many people trying to get on to Henry Street both from the Iroquois lot and the GO lot. My tax dollars say put in a light at that exit and at the Burns/Henry intersection. That way traffic will flow much more fluidly. I'm sure the residents on Henry Street will take excpetion to this idea but let's accept facts: There are 4 main north/south avenues in Whitby (from Victoria to at least highway 2) of which Henry is one. Treat this vital corridor as it should be...
Jabber.
PS: The region might also consider repairing the bone-jarring pothole just before the bridge going south on Henry before they get slapped with a suspension repair bill! My daughter spilled her juice on the way hone the other day... LOL.
Yep, that's my estimate.
I agree with you 100% Islander. I "use" the crosswalk every day - it's the most logical place for me to cross Henry to and from my house, and still the safest. But most days I have to wait for a suitable gap in traffic since north and south-bound traffic on Henry St never, ever stops if I am waiting on the curb to cross. Even if I am in the middle of crossing, they don't slow down. Drivers making the right turn from the GO lot onto Henry are generally very good about watching for pedestrians and letting people cross.
Seems like DRPS could make some easy money here from 6:30-8am and 4-6pm, at $150 a pop for failing to stop alone...
Durham's finest are probably close by in our Tim Hortons but I wouldn't count on them noticing anything. They don't even care about truckers illegally blocking lanes (even eastbound) when stopping for coffee.

Any update Liz? My wife was almost hit by an SUV going way too fast (the driver slid sideways right past her!) on Henry in the snow last week. It seems like this is the new problem spot in South Whitby. I hate to say it but it's going to take an accident to get any progress on slowing people down on this stretch.
I guess hockey is more important than public safety...
Next time, note down the license plate as well and fill out a
Road Watch report.
Well my wife was in the crosswalk and yes I agree it was weather related for sure. However, I think speed is the biggest part of this crosswalk issue. Everyone is in a hurry to get where they're going and nobody pays attention to the roads or the weather. It really becomes a problem when pedestrians are involved.
Jabber.
Forgot to mention that the crosswalk was completely invisible given the snow. If there was proper signage things might not have gotten so close. Overhead signs, flashing lights etc...
Jabber.
Well if that's the case I guess it really will take an accident to bring this to the proper people's attention and get something changed.
Jabber.
The signage that is there for the crosswalk is the appropriate signage. Overhead signage and flashing lights would be for a pedestrian cross-over not a crosswalk.
Jabber,
I agree with you totally, and have now found myself paying more attention as I drive up and down Henry -- I may have been an ignorant abuser before this thread came to my attention.
However, I still have one point of contention.
As I drove out of the arena complex yesterday, and turned north on Henry, I waited patiently for 12 (yes 12!!) people to cross Henry from the GO station lot.
NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM BOTHERED TO USE THE CROSSWALK!!!
Some walked beside it, other walked diagonally across the intersection, and a couple more crossed on the south side of the entrance.
Both sides need to respect the rules for this crosswalk to work properly.
