Read today about http://www.earthhour.org, where everyone shuts off the lights in their house for an hour, on March 29th. I'm thinking,,,,,,,,,an hour,,,,,,,no cost,,,,,,,,,,save money even better,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,for the enviroment. Sounds cool
Now in my dream world,,,Whitby would get involved, just like Toronto is,,,,,,and we as a community would meet at the ball park,,,,refreshments in hand,,,,and say hi to each other. How cool would that be???
Kind of like a man made power outage, and we become friendly towards each other,,,,,,,,,,I see the doves flying off into the sunset now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I'm there.
  Who's in????
That makes four of us,,,,,,
If we all bring a cooler, we can combine this event with the often discussed, but never executed pub night!!
We are up to at least 8,,,,cool
Thinking about this a little further, the obviously easiest way to shut off everything in the house will be to shut off the main electricity breaker.  That will satisfy the electrical.

If you want to go to an extreme, you should also shut of the main water valve -- this will officially kill any drippy faucets that might "ruin" the effort.

An interesting concept not considered is what to do about battery powered items, and items with battery back-up?  One would still be using energy if the battery is still powering the clock etc.

On further contemplation, I'm not sure that too many wobbly pops during the gathering would be a good idea.  It will take me at least another hour after the event to reprogram everything in the house that will lose it's memory when the power is off. Wink

You might want to stay home, and work on these issues. I'm sure the energy you are useing right now, needs to be conserved some how. I know you drained some of the positive energy I had, out of me, and that can't be good,,,,lol

All http://www.earthhour.org is requesting, and the cities, is to shut off all your "lights" for 1 hour. Anything else you wish to do is fine, but don't make it too much of a chore on yourself,,,,or you won't do anything.
It doesn't take alot to stop something good from happening. Let's try and stay positive. If we meet only one new friend that night,,it would all be worth it.
So before people start outing their neighbours please remember this was a voluntary event loosely organized by the WWF.

Jabber.

In the spirit of the event too, I mean we should be all doing our best to conserve all the time. One hour of one day of the year is not nearly enough.
I agree PLO, it would make a nice effort to carry out more than once a year -- even if just to remind ourselves exactly how dependent we have become on electricity, and to allow us to appreciate how our forefathers lived everyday of their lives.

I was disappointed that the streetlights remained on -- especially the one right in front of my house, but at the same time, I understand the Town's concern for general safety that might be compromised if the street lights were extinguished.

Other than that, it was a wonderful effort, and I was very proud of the number of houses that seemed to be participating -- well done all!!!
