Ok folks,

Lets talk about good restaurants in and around our lovely area. Some of our favourite places around town are:

Top Three:
1) Mondo Ristorante - Been there twice and both times had exceptional experiences with food and service. It's pricey but worth it. The steak I had here was absolutely orgasmic.
2) Greek Tycoon on Brock - Good, solid Greek fare with attentive service. If we are craving Greek it's nice to know this place is nearby. Pricing is moderate but we did get our money's worth every time we have been.
3) Firkin (across from Mondo) - 25 cent wing specials Mondays and Thursdays with friendly service and a quality beer selection. It's our fave local and doesn't seem like you are actually in a chain. Sweet chili wings there are amazing and they sometimes play international soccer matches that you can't get on the telly.

Three places I would not recommend are:

Bottom Three:
1) Pimento's - Pricey and packed. We have eaten there once and the cost factor vs. meal experience was not worth it. Also, we tried to take my mom there for New year's eve and the gauging was atrocious.
2) South Side Grill on Dundas near Brock - Used to be our favourite place to go. The food was always great, the service was adequate and was our fave greasy spoon in the area. We felt that we got to know the waitress pretty good there. However, we went there once when busy and both waitresses ignored us for about 10 minutes (there were no seats). The best way to judge customer service is how they treat you when really busy. They failed miserably in our book.
3) Tap and Tankard - Horrid wings, a young wait staff who prefer chatting about getting bombed the night before and a cover charge on occasion make this a place I have no interest in returning to.

Okay...how about yours???
We like Nice Bistro at Brock and Dundas and for Thai food you can't beat Desaim in the AMC
"McSushi" at the Oshawa Center. If you go after 7 P.M. most of the selections are close to half price. We have found the service fantastic and friendly, and the prep area very clean. Very fresh product. Have never been disappointed.
As for Greek, we found the Greek Tycoon brutal. For years we have always gone the The Prince, on Dundas beside the DQ. It was fantastic a few years ago before the owners sold it, but still a lot better than the Greek Tycoon IMHO.

I we to that Firkin place a couple a weeks ago for wings on a Monday and they were fantastic !!!!

You're right about Desiam, great Thai food, also Wah2 on Brock St., just north of Dundas.

There is of course the Lake Grill, on Brock Street, south of Victoria, excellent breakfast!!

Greek Tycoon has always been great for us. The waiter there has little tolerance for people who don't make reservations or for those who make reservations and do not have full attendance. Doesn't bother me...he wants to schedule his night appropriately and doesn't appreciate fly by the sea of your pants people. The Prince always looked a bit dodgy from the outside to be honest. I'm not going in there when the Tycoon is just fine.

Thanks,

BuNdO

I am surprised so many think highly of DeSiam. I've gone twice and found the food was ok but not great. Wah 2 is definately a level above IMO, although it has more than just thai. I'd rather drive out to Thai Orchid in Pickering then settle for DeSiam, I find it's much better, though still not as good as thai I've had downtown Toronto.

I agree with Caroline. Our experience has been that Desiam was better before they expanded. When it first opened we were blown away by the food, but lately we've found the rice sub-par (sort of dried out) and the service slow. The lunch menu still offers up good value, but definitely find it a little pricey at night for what you get. We also love Wah 2 and will now try the Thai Orchid, so Thanks for the tip!
