Judging from the % hike this year, WHITBY is #1 highest out of 25.

...that's right just a wake up call to all us voters.  You gotta love good fiscal management oh and don't forget Cullen Gardens and the million dollar Station Gallery move/reno across the road[previous mayor] .

Ah, you know what it's all worth the $$$$ + a year I pay!  Wait hold on a second! Am I paying double what I should be...??  Nah! that can't be true.,,just a bad nightmare, I'm goin' back to bed.

g'nite all
talk about gettin hosed! this makes me sick!!!!!!!!!
My biggest gripe with this is that somehow, Toronto managed to keep their increase down to 4%, while we're suffering up at 7%.

For a full year, we've heard about how poor Toronto is, and how they have to cut services to meet budgets. Yet they manage, by making a few sound business decisions to cut overly expensive services, to put forth a reasonable increase, while Whitby comes in at almost double, and pats themselves on the back for it. Even the councillors opposed to the 7% were happy with an increase that still would have been higher than a lot of the others.

Maybe its just me, but I don't see us getting better service for our inflated tax dollars than other communities. Am I missing something?
What an odd trend. Why is the East paying so much more in general than Toronto West? Also, what is the average price of a home on the West? Would that account for the difference? I know a friend of mine paid close to double for house that we did - makes me crazy thinking of it!

I think this is terrible considering too that a large chuck of our taxes go to the school board and we are still without a school.

Well, I read that the west end's proximity to Pearson Airport and the US border, Windsor etc... makes it more attractive for Manufacturers to set up shop there.

We just don't have the commercial base here to keep res. taxes down.  Hopefully ECOplace...will ease our tax burdon. Also, the money alone spent to buy CULLEN GARDENs...I believe was $10 million could have accrued interest and eased our pockets more as well.

Though I believe that we do pay higher tax prices per dollar in Durham we need to look at the apples to apples comparisions. For example, a 4br executive home in Durham will cost ~$5,500 in taxes. The same TYPE of home in Toronto would cost over $12,000 in taxes.
But the reality is that an apples to apples comparison can't be made. Toronto has the infrstructure it needs to support the people. Durham doesn't. A house in Durham can't be compared to a house in Toronto on a tax basis. Given the sheer numbers of businesses and homes in Toronto their tax rate will always be lower. It's a given until Toronto starts to crumble... So it looks like we are being taxed now in an effort to build the infrastructure that will be in place for years to come.

I hate it too but c'est la vie...

Jabber.
