As part of our commitment to advocate for greater awareness of the importance of mental health, three of Durham Region’s largest mental health service providers will host a symposium for National Mental Health Week on Thursday, May 8, 2008. Representatives from Whitby Mental Health Centre (WMHC), the Canadian Mental Heath Association’s (CMHA) Durham branch and Durham Mental Health Services are working collaboratively to educate our community about mental health.
The day begins at 2 p.m. at the Whitby Mental Health Centre, 700 Gordon Street and will consist of a series of free education sessions, interactive demonstrations, presentations and keynote address. Some of the session topics include Foods that Make you Sleep, Children’s Mental Health and Dealing with Stress. Attendees will also learn simple yoga techniques, meditation tips and participate in nutrition consultations.
At 8 p.m. Greg Louganis, world class Olympian diver, will speak about his story and how he dealt with mental health issues during his young and adult life. There is a $15 admission fee just for the Louganis address as space is limited. All other presentations are free to the public.
