I missed the public meeting at the marina, but I have seen some of the artists conceptions of the new build (ECOPlace) to the north of Victoria. And having seen the drawings, my reaction to the positive comments about the development on this forum is one of astonishment.
Have you seen the size of this megastructure! It is a massive change to our area. It will rival a major downtown intersection for density and scale.

The space between Victoria and the 401 will be an incredibly dense concrete monstrosity. It may be built to a high degree of “environmental sensitivity” but we are still taking about 15, 000 people in 30 BUILDINGS 20 STORIES HIGH, as well as the increased traffic due to the commercial/retail/hotel patrons. I did not move from downtown to the quiet suburbs only to have the downtown come home to me.
I am realistic...some construction is coming...the question is can we moderate the size and density to keep the Whitby Shores area (with its pleasant mix of conservation area, rec centre, soccer fields, port & marina, bike paths and quiet residential streets) intact.
I seriously hope that as many of you attend the Council meeting tonight…we must voice our concerns. Although I fear that it is a done deal and all we can do is watch it happen. As the Star said of the Mayor: “Perkins already has her shovel ready for the groundbreaking.”
