Has anyone else been fortunate enough to have a few white tailed deer sightings lately?

In my three years here, I've only seen a few but this spring they seem to be everywhere - especially along the trail and pond area and on our side of the fence. We spotted one grazing by the benches at the pond on Saturday.

Anyone have any insight into the increase in our deer population?

You can't beat standing on your front lawn and watching a deer graze across the street. My kids just loved it and it seemed fitting to see one enjoying a snack after the whole area was just tidied up with our WS spring clean-up (another great learning experience for my kids too).
There used to be lots of deer in the field where Atlas Logistics has built that massive distribution centre. Along with all the other construction in that area, I imagine the deer have made their way down to our area.

The deer population in the province has increased over the past few years also. My parents live up North and there are about double the number of deer there were 3 years ago. That is probably happening in our area too.
I saw three in the clearing beside the pond Saturday morning. They were on our side of the fence. It was very neat to see. The bigger of the 3 stared me and my 2 dogs down, not being sure what to make of us and having no obvious cover to retreat to. They eventually hopped away toward Victoria St.

From what I can tell, there are only 2 ways onto our side of the fence ... at the lake and at Victoria St. However, I did find a good size hole in the fence next to the pond which I'm sure the deer can easily get through. This may explain why we're suddenly finding them on our side.

I love this neighbourhood. The natural aspects are amazing. A few years ago we had the 2 giant grey owls lounging on the lamposts during the winter, I've counted a gaggle (is it a gaggle?) of upwards of 40 swans swimming along the lakeshore or in and about the marina, we have dozens of cranes standing idle in the lagoon every year, I've seen my fare share of fox running about and, finally, I love the countless birds including the tiny yellow ones twittering about, the variety of ducks and even the geese and all of their poopy glory.

We made a good decision to move here ;o)
They jump the fence - no problem at all. We've seem them jump the fence by the pond easy as can be. No holes needed. Smile

Swans should be having their babies soon. We live by the pond, so like clockwork, every year they arrive and spend all their time by the pond until it's time to have their babies, then they head over to the other side of the conservation area. Should see the signets within another month by the boardwalk.

Jump the fence! Wow! I never even thought of that. Amazing.
We were lucky enough to see 3 full grown does in the field behind our house just after Christmas. In full daylight no less. Truly amazing...

Jabber.
My wife was unloading some groceries out of the back of the minivan and she heard a clipety clop, clipety clop noise behind her. She turned around and there were 3 full grown deer walking around our court. They must have taken a wrong turn somewhere as we are on the very east end of the subdivision. Maybe they came accross the trail by the WMHC and up Gordon? It was a sight to see.
That's amazing. Poor little guys. Hope your wife shared some groceries. Smile

She ran up onto the porch ready to dive into the house. They were running inbetween all the houses looking for a way out, but being in a court, there is only one way out....back down the street. They eventually made it out. This was in the middle of the day too.
