Four, five, six...

Ok, am I becoming an old fuddy duddy?

There is a gentleman driving his Harley around and around the Whitby Shores loop. It's a beautiful bike and he is very cautious. He may even be a new driver. It's starting to annoy me. Tongue I know it's his right to drive wherever he wants. I know this is a beautiful neighbourhood but come on...

Oh wait, seven.

Thx.
or get yourself a Harley and chase him around the heighbourhood...LOL!
Unfortunately it'll happen until the bikers need to fill up their tank. Going around and around will only burn gas. And I think there are some learners out there. I know bikes are better on gas but if you're just driving around it's kind of silly isn't it? Just my $0.02...
Nope I don't ride and never will. I know bikes use less gas than cars and they make great sense when used as day to day transportation. But if you're just riding for the sake of riding it seems silly to me. Especially a Harley. Just making noise and burning fuel. Nothing like watching nature run for the hills as I ride my noise maker down the highway. I'm sure I'll get flamed on that one! I guess everyone has their own therapy though...
They were out in force yesterday. Around and around and around. I think it was the same people...

Huh??  Not sure I get that.

Clearly you don't ride Jabber.  The whole point of riding a bike, especially a Harley, is to just drive around with no particular place to go.  It's not about transportation, it's about riding.  Put it this way, driving anything with a windshield is like watching scenery on TV.  There's a disconnect with everything around you (which probably explains why people drive the way they do).  On a bike you're part of it.

As for circling the neighborhood, seems a little strange.  Maybe he was trying out a friend's bike, or maybe he just bought it and was getting used to it.  A Harley is a heavy bike that takes some getting used to.

BTW:  It wasn't me circling the neighborhood, I haven't ridden in 4 years.  Still miss it though.  I suppose it's one of those things you either get or you don't (like the PT Cruiser).

Motorcycles don't have to be loud.  Cars and motorcycles that are ridiculously, annoyingly loud often have illegal exhaust systems - like straight pipes instead of a muffler.
LOL. I love sparring with you MB. As long as there are different people there will be differing opinions. I do find the noise annoying though. I'm positive I'm not the only one who feels this way. But as you say until there is a law there will be straight pipes. I don't doubt that these pipes have saved lives. Both human and animal...

That's the beauty of this crazy world we live in.  We're all different and don't have to "get" what drives others (no pun intended).  You don't need to get it Jabber.  I also don't believe you should be attacked for your opinion on it.  It's not like you're breaking a law or demanding the government pass a law banning people from riding for pleasure only.  You just have a different viewpoint on the subject.

For the record, loud pipes have been known to save lives.

Loud pipes save lives....that's a good one!

That sounds like an argument that I would use to convince my wife that an expensive custom exhaust was a safety issue. I'm sure there is some truth to that, but I'm still laughing...
It really is against the law to have a straight exhaust.  I would imagine that getting charged for it would be pretty difficult unless you were pulled over for something else and the officer decided to throw the book at you. Motorcycles are great and all but drive a straight-piped bike through a dense subdivision early in the morning and I don't think many neighbours will be impressed.

Highway Traffic Act Wrote:
Every motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and excessive smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, straight exhaust, gutted muffler, hollywood muffler, by-pass or similar device upon a motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle.  R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 75 (1).

On a lighter note, remember to attach sleigh bells to your horse-drawn sleigh this winter - otherwise you could be fined a whopping $5!  Tongue

Highway Traffic Act Wrote:
77.  (1)  Every person travelling on a highway with a sleigh or sled drawn by a horse or other animal shall have at least two bells attached to the harness or to the sleigh or sled in such a manner as to give ample warning sound.  R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 77 (1).
Penalty
(2)  Every person who contravenes subsection (1) is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to a fine of not more than $5.  R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 77 (2).

Speaking of loud bikes. One of the good tips that my instructor gave when I took my CMA motorcycle safety course was to replace the horn on your motorcycle with a BIG one. Go to the junkyard, cut a horn off of an old 70s or 80s American sedan and wire it up instead of the stock one.
Hear, hear! Get it...? Giggle I especially love the guy across the street from my house who tunes up his carb (ie: revs the engine to make sure all is good) every Saturday morning but never rides the damn thing. Strange. I guess he is getting ready for Winter?

On a weight per weight basis, bikes are actually less efficient then cars.  I took a look at the specs on a couple of Harleys, and they are no better some smaller cars.

As for the noise, I can certainly do without.  I have my license but wouldn't ride something so loud and disruptive.
