My concerns about the Whitby Mental Health Facility have grown after today. As a home owner  in Whitby Shores I have been using the water front trail like many of the area residence. Our family goes for walks everyday for the past two years. Today was the first time a security officer has approached me and suggested I keep my older children closer. My little ones are always with in reach but my older ones are 11 and were kicking a soccer ball around about 20ft away from me. He suggested as a parent I keep them closer. This concerns me as there are many families using  the trail and older children often to ride their bikes or run a bit ahead of parents. Once cautioned I immediately asked if someone had escaped? He replied "no."

Should we even be using this public property? If no one has escaped and they are routinely permitted out and are a danger to children why are they not in a secure area????
What precations have been taken to ensure we are safe??
Were you on WHMC land or the Waterfront Trail? I could be wrong but I don't believe that anything within the "gates" of the WMHC is public land. Hopefully someone knows the answer to this...

the trails are public use arent they? I let my 2 daughters bike through there, we have picnics there ....this is getting worse every month.

I noticed a man sitting almost in front of the Lakeridge hopsital smoking by the guard rail that blocks the water hole there. He is there every night and I know he is coming from WMHC...doesnt seem like a safe situatiion
I don't think things have gotten worse. And the fact that the WMHC now has a guard there is good news. I really wouldn't fret about the comments made. As long as we are aware of what is going on we're just fine. My family is there three times a week biking, walking or running and nothing too bad yet... But, out of curiousity, it would be good to know if the trail leading through WMHC is public or private. The trail goes through lots of areas in its span so perhaps Elizabeth can let us know?

Jabber.
They are private lands with public access and there are signs posted indicating "use at your own risk".
Thanks Trixie. Good to know.
