As long as we're kvetching here, why doesn't the city put some garbage/recylce bins close to the boxes so we can rid ourselves of all the unwanted Rogers and other flyers. Too much to hope for?
Jabber.
Jabber,
I stuff my junk I never asked for back into the send slot. I'm so sick with the amount of fliers I'm getting flooded with!

I think it's pretty obvious what message I'm trying to send: I don't need/want 3 Extreme Fitness fliers per week in my mailbox. I don't need/want 4 Rogers fliers per week selling me the services I already have. And I really, really don't want/need another real estate agent telling me every day that she/he is going to work for ME. Stickers informing/begging/asking Canada Post to stop doing this don't seem to work.
The mail gets sorted at Canada Post - everything from the mailbox gets thrown into a bag and off they go - they can waste their time but mine is just too precious to me!
And yes, I already called the "dog owner" several times. Let's just say that the owner is not a good listener...
I have this crazy idea that if evreyone did what I'm doing, we would stop getting our mailboxes filled with trash. Call me an optimist
I just hope that the mail people are putting in the mail slot doesn't get mixed up with the garbage you are putting in. Sometimes silly people put things in there that are actually important.
I'm not sure what message you are trying to send but the mail carrier is not a decision maker at Canada Post. I don't even think the guy who fills/empties our boxes works directly for Canada Post. You'd have as much luck sending a message by talking to the dog that leaves you presents on your lawn instead of talking to his owner.
I sort my mail at home and put the stuff I don't want in the blue box.
I don't want your grandma to be sad either! As I said, Canada Post sorts everything in their facilities and I doubt there is much danger of your grandma not getting her well deserved card
I feel I've been forced to use those guerilla-type tactics by a very large and unresponsive corporation.
I just don't want the genuine mail I put in the mail box to be accidently thrown away with the 30 or 40 flyers everybody in the neighbourhood threw in where they don't belong. If my grandma's birthday card gets lost in your trash and she doesn't get it she will be sad. I don't want my grandma to be sad. Not to mention my mother on mother's day, "I swear I mailed it" just won't cut it.
As far as flyers on the outside of the mail boxes goes, I would use no service of anyone who does that, EVER. They are not billboards and many of them look terrible. I would rather have ten flyers in my mailbox everyday than see one posted to the outside of the box.
The biggest problem that I have with some people's choice to "re-mail" their junk is that they fail to consider what the effect would be if everyone did it.
If everyone felt that they had the right to re-mail anything that they received that they did not want, the entire mail system would be so clogged with junk mail that normal mail would not be able to be processed. Think about your volume of junk mail, and multiply it by 26 million or so.
Re-mailing is a selfish route to rid oneself of something that could be easily brought home and dropped in a recycling bin. If you really wish the junk mail to stop, either add the request as many have suggested, or better still contact the companies sending the junk and let them know that you will not be providing them with your business as long as they continue to be environmentally insensitive.

If everyone re-mailed their junk, there would be no junk mail - really! I think it's a weak argument saying junk mail is here to stay so get on with the program. Plastic bags used to be acceptable a few years ago but now the tide is turning. Same with junk mail - it should go the way of the dodo bird (the bird, by the way, should've stayed...).
Are you actually suggesting to call Extreme Fitness (to provide an example of a notoriuos offender) and tell them that when they flood Whitby Shores with their garbage they should exclude my specific address? Do you honestly believe they will operationalize it and the mail carrier is going to follow that? So I should waste my time calling dozens of businesses (often being put on hold and tortured with their music) and tell them what they should've known in the first place? I do have other priorities in my life. I've wasted enough time dealing with Canada Post and I'm simply fed up. My solution may not be pretty but it's a sign of desperation. A scream of powerlessness, as you may call it.
The sticker doesn't work for me - I'm on the lowest level of the mailbox and it's very hard to make it visible. Nine out of ten time it gets ignorred.
Risky,
I think you misinterpreted my comments. I said that if everyone re-mailed their junk, it would effectively clog the entire system to the extent that nothing would be processed on a timely basis. Using the mail box as your personal garbage can is extremely selfish and self-centred, since it doesn't consider teh big picture effect if everyone did it.
Also, I never suggested that you have Extreme Fitness selectively send their junk mail. I suggested that you call Extreme Fitness and let them know that you don't believe that their corporate philosophy of junk mail is environmentally friendly, and that you will not be a customer of theirs as long as they continue their environmentally unfriendly junk mail policy. If enough people did this, I am quite sure that Extreme Fitness would cease the junk mail that caused clientele decrease instead of increase.
It's not an easy solution, but it is the best one.
Silly me, I would like to believe that capitalism is about having choices - I think it's hilarious to talk about capitalism in the context of Canada Post. That's not capitalism - that's a monopoly. There is no competition!
This is the reason why I would expect government sponsored orgs to behave differently. I don't know why I should support CBC TV if the amount of commercial garbage I get from them is the same as from Global/CTV. Either run your organization without overcomercialization, ask for more money (I'm actually open to that idea) or get out of the way and stop sucking taxpayers money. The same with Canada Post - either provide your service without destroying our environment or let's open the bidding and see what other companies may have to offer us. Right now we simply don't know. That's capitalism! Are you sure you want it Gusto?
As cackam indicated, the fliers are not even mine - I have no obligation to take them and sort them. If someone drops a pile of useless papers on your porch, believe it or not, you don't become their owner.
You are punishing the wrong person. The mailman doesn't want to fill the boxes with unaddressed mail anymore than you want to get it. He wants to fill the boxes as fast as he can and get back to his wife and kids. Now he has to sort out the mail from the garbage and delay his welcome home kisses even more.
Canada Post makes a lot of money allowing people to send this junk mail as you like to call it. Running a nation wide postal service is an expensive venture and they need every penny they can get. If extreme fitness wants to help them with that then I'm all for it. I just don't want to spend more for mail then I already do. If the post office gets into trouble financially we will be bailing them out. That means more taxes, everbody who likes more taxes please raise your hand.
I would really love it if I could watch tv with no comericials, drive to work without looking at billboards and open my mail box to find nothing but love letters from far off lands. We chose capitalism, live with it.
Agreed. Let's keep it clean. Good ideas are needed, flames, insults and put downs are not...
Jabber.
Hey cakcam,
Maybe some of those flyers belong to Bundo -- he was having all kinds of problems getting mail for a while -- Bundo, did you get your quota of Extreme Fitness flyers this month??
In all seriousness, I'm glad to see that you're trying to make a difference, and I hope that it does work! That is all that we can each do individually!
