Hope,
While I generally agree with your sentiments that hard work and natural, not chemical methods should be used to control weeds and pests please remember that people are well within their rights to use almost whatever means they like until the McGuinty law comes into effect next Spring. I can see this thread getting out of control pretty quickly...

Hi there!  I am a first time writer to the forum.  It saddens me that it is because of a negative matter.

I am so disappointed in the widespread use of pesticides in this community!

In many areas there has been a ban on the use of this very damaging chemical.  I can not wait to have it here.  This ban should tell you alone that it is not safe to use.

The fact alone that when it is sprayed a sign goes up to tell you not to go on it should alert you that maybe it is dangerous to your health.

I know that if I am walking around in this beautiful neighbourhood ( which is everyone's rite) and I walk past a home that has used this and I get a wiff of the chemical I am left feeling very ill and very upset and left concerned for my health  and the health of my unborn child.
Many articles warn that you should not breathe in pesticides especially if you are expecting.

All this to keep a few unwanted bugs out of your life ( it also kills the good bugs that we need).  Remember it is to kill pests not necessarily weeds.  Weeds can be picked out or use a natural based fertilizer to help cut down on the growth of weeds.

Please reconsider the use of pesticides.  They are very damaging to your health.  I feel my freedom to enjoy my own neighbourhood is being taken away from me as the use of pesticides increases.

Remember after the 24 hour ( I hear this is the time they ask you to wait before you go on your lawn) it is still unsafe for a child or even a pet to use or walk on your lawn.

It is important that we consider making changes to help improve our environment, not use things that will add more chemicals to the air we breathe.

Please do some research before you use this so you are aware of what you are doing to add to polluting our neighbourhood and the air we breathe.

Why Smile We're civilized people here, or so we think!

I agree completely with everything Hope said. Welcome to the 21st century folks - it looks like some of you must be legislated into it.

We use Nutri-Lawn's Organics Plus Program and we have a very healthy weedless lawn (for the most part). If you keep your grass cut at the proper length and do your part once and awhile, it doesn't take much to have a nice lawn without Pesticides. The proof is in the non-weedy grass ;o)
I agree with a ban, too bad all we got was a partial ban. If these chemicals are as dangerous as they say then golf courses shouldn't be using them either.
Just to be the one to go against the grain,,,,,,,I believe the product is safe when used properly,,,,,,the problem is that these companies are over spraying, and applying the product too often.
If applied at the right strength, once in the later spring, and once in the fall, there wouldn't be a health risk,,,,,,("if" it is mixed at the proper rate).
Please don't yell at me,it's just my opinion,,,,,,,
I have several friends who spray several months a year,,,,for close to 20 years,,,,and they haven't grown "antlers" yet,,,,,or tumours
No problem,,,,maybe you didn't read my post,,,,or all of it,,,before you hit the reply button.
Common sense has to be involved,,,,,,,,
If the product is applied as per instruction,,,by properly trained people,,,,then the ministry of enviroment says it is safe. Alot of the people applying this product,,,are not the licensed people, but employees,or homeowners,,,,
The problem is these companies have half a year to get all the money they can from you,,,,so they offer packages with discounts, for three/four weed sprays, 4 fertilizings, grub/bug killer, and partridges in your pear tree,,,,,,way too much, and not needed,,,,,
Some companies now just come and spot spray the weeds,,,,,and that's all that's really required.
Now you can get enviroment friendly organisms that kill your grubs, and one application is good for up to 10 years,,,,safe for children and pets.
If you don't have a lot of weeds,,,,and the people who spray every year don't,,,,,,then skip a season.
I know if you live by the conservation area,,,,your beat. If you don't stay ahead of the weeds your done. Just hope you like the colour of yellow,,,,,,,or you like homemade wine,,,,lol
i dont srpay but pull my weeds out and they still come back...my backyard is horrible...i am thinking of paving it...LOL
It's difficult to get the whole root system,,,that's why they come back,,,,,,,
It's also good for certain weeds,,but alot of them break off above the root system.
It may be time to change the way you like to look at your lawn,,,,,,,because it won't be a nice soft grass,,,,it will be a lot of different sized, coloured, types of weeds,,,and allergy season will be right behind it,,,,,,,,,,,,
If you have serious alergies, pesticides is the last thing you should use. Ever. Pesticides are actually known to trigger alergic reactions:

http://www.musc.edu/oem/pestallr.html

A specific pesticide exposure which might cause an allergic reaction in a susceptible individual can be 1,000 times less than an exposure which would cause a toxic reaction. For example, exposure to pyrethrum can trigger an asthma attack at a trivial dose of exposure.
