I guess I don't mind too much but for someone who didn't grow up with "Metro" stores, the name sounds like another example of the blanding down of branding. It lacks character and seems so generic that the name itself becomes meaningless. I actually read this news while reading the "Metro" mini newspaper you get on the GO. What exactly does the word Metro have to do with a Grocery store?

I've become saddened by this trend as of late .... The Skydome became The Rogers Centre, The Paramount Theatre became The ScotiaBank Theatre, The Hummingbird Centre became the Sony Centre, A&P and Dominion are becoming Metro.

Ahh well. Thanks for letting me rant.
I wonder if anything will change besides the name? One of the few rewards program I particiapte in is AirMiles. I was disappointed enough when they discontinued their Baby program.
I doubt very much will change in the short term. But if it does I really hope the bulk frozen seafood doesn't go! I love it... Sniff... Craving shrimp right now...

Jabber.
Funny things is that that first time I set foot in there it struck me as me Metro store. Many of the products were Quebec based like Leclerc and Vachon, and their generic brand stuff looked familiar. Came home and looked on the net and sure enough Metro owns A&P. See:

Now if they would open some Super C stores here, I would right at home.
Maybe the Metro folks will bring back Steinberg's just for kicks! You can't be old enough to remember those...

Sad to see the A&P name go... good memories here as a kid I vividly remember shopping with my parents every week at the A&P store at the Corner of Jeanne-Manace & Sherbrooke. It had two entrances one on Park Ave and the other on Jeanne-Mance. That was in the late 70's and 80's.

Anyone here from Quebec is very familiar with Metro stores so we don't find the name generic. Usually Metro stores are the size of the Brock St. Price Chopper. The Quebec Super C stores are very large. It would be great if we ended up with a Super C type store. They stock nice quality brands at discount prices. Metro stores in Quebec do not participate in the Airmiles program. It will be too bad if they do the same thing here.

Ironically, anyone here from Quebec who is old enough to remember (aging myself here!) will know that this is not the first time we will be witnessing the disappearance of the "Dominion" name.

Back in the day (80's, I would guess), Dominion in Quebec got bought out, and the stores got converted to the "Provigo" name. It was actually kind of refreshing when I moved to Ontario in the 90s to see that Dominion logo again!

I will definitely be interested to see what changes, other than cosmetic, this might bring to our local store. As things have settled in after their opening last winter, I do wonder about the long-term feasibility of this store, especially with the 24-hr model.

I do not pretend to be a grocery-store expert, however, what I have noted so far is:

- the store never seems to have that "busy" feel to it....I do not think I have ever waited in line for a cashier to serve me.
- Most people (myself included) appear to be popping in for a few items, as opposed to doing their weekly groceries

As I have stated before, I would love to do my weekly grocery run in our neighbourhood, however, given their prices, I cannot bring myself to do it. If it was a matter of a few bucks here and there, I could swallow it. However, I truly believe that in a typical week, if I bought all the same items there that I buy at Superstore, I would be forking over at least an extra $20 or more.

Let's see what happens as it becomes a Metro store!

Wow, I hope they won't pass along those costs to the consumer, given how high their prices are generally already!

The article I read in the Star quoted one of the company's executives saying that this move should reduce costs in the long run.

I sure am old enough to remember Steinberg's.....I lived close to the West Island Mall (as it was named back then). That mall's 2 anchor stores were Steinberg's for groceries, and Miracle Mart as the "sort of" department store.....plus there was a Dominion and a Metro store within easy walking distance....talk about flashbacks!

I remember the Miracle Mart department store in Scarborough Town Centre... but that's going back a few years; I think by the time Sunday shopping was legalized (1991-1992) it had long since closed.

i remember Miracle Mart....wow now thats going back years!!!!I use to shop with my mom in that store
oh my goodness,,,,,yup big bargains!!!The good old days before there was a police station in STC...lol

So I guess next you will tell me that you used to eat at Bar-B-Barn and Ponderosa, hung out with the crowd at Pinocchio's, and shopped at Cumberland's and Toyville.
