In today's NATIONAL POST they listed the SUPERIOR PROPANE at 505 Victoria st. E. as one of 17 GTA "similar operations" facilities as the SUNRISE one in Toronto.

Well, with that comforting thought I google mapped the distance between my WHITBY SHORES home and SUPERIOR PROPANE and got a distance of 2.4kms.  I'm happy to say that's out of the 1.6km so called "hazard" zone.

All this time I thought all I had to worry about was the PICKERING & DARLINGTON nuclear plants.  Who Knew?

I worry for any residents in Brock st.south...including the new Brookfield Condo project "future" residents.

The SUNRISE propane disaster was a wake-up call....very scary stuff.
.... and likely an isolated incident. Gas stations are explosions waiting to happen but they build them everywhere (even next door to unsuspecting homeowners) but so far so good, no explosions YET! Similarly, when was the last time a propane company blew up? While a tragedy for the family and friends of the two men who died, let's not start running around screaming "the sky is falling" just yet.

That being said, I wouldn't buy a house across the street from one, or next to a gas station or along a power line corridor either. I did buy one between two massive Nuclear Power plants though so wish me luck!
The other factor that I believe needs to be considered is size.

While I have never seen the Sunrise facility first-hand, I've seen enough pictures of it to reasonably assess its size. It appears to have been a somewhat bigger facility than the Superior Propane facility on Victoria is.
