just a quick question....we are looking for a small to medium size dog...somnething that is good with cats and kids and isnt to high strung. suggestions???

I think cocker spaniels are awesome. I have had one for the past 8 years. Others may disagree about them being high strung, but mine only barks at the doorbell. Awesome with my cat and with my toddler.

Another spaniel to consider ... I love my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Totally outgoing and friendly. She loves kids more than other dogs! She is quite small (20 lbs) but can totally hold her own among other bigger dogs.

A Shih Tzu is an amazing family dog. They don't shed, are not yappy, don't require a tonne of exercise and love, love, love people.

A super temperment, they just love to be around people. A friend of mine had 2 cockers for 14 years and absolutely loved them to pieces. When she went to get a new dog after her cockers passed, she talked to many friends etc. and opted for a Shih Tzu, she says - it is the best breed of dog she has ever had. Honestly they, like so many other breeds as well, are amazing dogs.
