Off Leash Dog Park in Whitby
Just an FYI as I know I talk to dog owner's the in the n'hood about Whitby getting it's own off leash dog park (as Oshawa and Ajax both have their own and I've signed quite a few petitions requesting one)... and I emailed the town of Whitby about it last week... surprisingly they replied but it doesn't like anything will be happening in the next year or so, the lady was not even sure when it would get to the approval board. Makes me wonder if we could borrow the land that the Durham Board of Education owns here in Whitby Shores and clear that and use it until they finally realize the families here need a school?!?! It'd be great to have a common place that everyone could visit to let the dogs run about ...

I say, we take over the baseball diamond, from Oct 15th till April 1st. When the town sees how popular it is, they will give us an area,,,,just to protect the diamond. How about this Saturday morning at 10, to get the feel of it???????

RE: Off Leash Dog Park in Whitby
I am all for that - as we normally visit there now there anyway to let our pup run free for a bit.... but unfortunately Saturday we aren't around - if you can get a group going - go for it. If not I'd be up for next Saturday for sure! They'd probably just show up and give us all fines...

They can only give you a fine if they know who you are. Since it's only a bylaw infraction,,,,they'd have to follow me home to figure out who I was, since this is a form of protest, for a leash free park,,,,

Brian,

I would question the wisdom of such protest right beside the playground - the optics are just brutal on that one. As for taking over the school board land, I'm all for it as long as it's properly secured (i.e. fenced) and maintained.

I don't think a bylaw officer with his/her summons pad would make many children have nightmares, or cause any one to shake uncontrollably,,,but on the other hand, this is Whitby,,,,,who knows.
I was being a little sarcatic anyway,,,,,and I doubt anyone, including a bylaw officer, will be there tomorrow.
We can all rest assured that we will all be safe with our morning coffee, tomorrow.

Brian,

I appreciate your sense of humor. I'm just not sure if that's the best way to get going on this. If you guys want to have an impact, why don't you do your little protest a front of the City Hall? You need allies in the community to pull something like this off and some people just don't like unleashed dogs close to their children, no matter how "friendly" or "small" they are (I know, it's just crazy...). You will have enough on your hands convincing the city without alienating a significant part of the population.

The diamond is a nice fenced off area, which makes it semi secure,,,there were no other comments, so I'm happy to let the topic rest. I have no further comments on the subject, thankyou

RE: Off Leash Dog Park in Whitby
I think the IDEA of turning that unused school land into an unleashed dog area is nice.. however don't ever see it happening, as much as may talk or joke about it. The town of Whitby doesn't seem to rushed to give us a park such as this, and I can understand people in the neighbourhood being opposed to it, although I am sure I speak for each dog owner who would love to just being able to walk down the street and tire their dog out a bit, not to mention it's just nice to be social and dog parks are a great way to chat with people with a common interest.
