Driver's In Whitby Shore's at the Four way stops
I'm relatively new to the forum and have been reading the posts with interest.

I take my children to the bus stop each morning which is located at one of our four way stops and I'm appalled at how many driver's in our neighbourhood do NOT stop at all, at the stop signs. Even with many children milling around at the corner, most driver's roll right through. Many are talking on cell phones and unaware of anyone around them. Most of these driver's also drive right past the school bus with it's lights flashing and do not even hesitate when the driver's pushes the horn.

Will it take having someone being hit for people to wake up? Or maybe we should have the police cruise by when the bus is loading.

I totally agree with you that there are some really careless drivers in this area. It bothers me that people speed down our streets on a regular basis. With so many children around someone is eventually going to hit one because they are going to fast or even hit a neightbour backing out, or someone crossing the street. The stop signs are totally an issue but not the only one!

RE: Driver's In Whitby Shore's at the Four way stops
The thing that really bothers me is there is a guy down the street from me that drives his kids in his smart car one in his lap in the drivers seat holding the steering wheel and the other in the passenger seat. The kids are approx. 8 and 10 years old. He must be driving them to the bus stop around the corner as it happens quite frequently between 8:30am and 8:45am and 3:30- 4:00pm This had been going on for a bit last school year the month of June and has continued this year.  Yes I have put in a road watch complaint as well as contacted them. I have also called directly and to the Whitby police detachment and explained to them and asked someone to come out to speak to the parent. Nothing has been done to date.
It would only take someone on our street to back out of their driveway or run a stop sign for this to end tragically. Not to mention if he could not keep control of his vehicle and go onto the sidewalk where there are many children walking home from school.

RE: Driver's In Whitby Shore's at the Four way stops
There is a statistic out there (don't have the exact #s) that says most accidents happen very close to home!
Recently in Markham a mother picking her child up from Kindergarden who lived "just around the corner" did not strap her child in as she was "just going home" and someone ran a red and hit her and the child was ejected from the car and was in Sick Kids for over 2 weeks... Let's be smart everyone - we don't want this to end tragically!
It is easy .... we all need to ensure we...Stop - don't ROLL at the stop signs, stop when the bus signals are on, Don't race down Whitby Shores Greenway (Raceway!)

My 2 Cents:

I think that why people are so lax regarding their driving behaviour is the lack of police presence in Whitby. I can go for weeks at a time without seeing a cop car (unless I go to Tim Horton's that is).

Since we have an officer who lives on Portage,,,and one who lives on Whitby Shores (Conservation side), I see patrol cars fairly often. Just never see them hang around at any of the intersections, or set up radar on Whitby Shores.
Maybe they don't want to be in a position to have to give a ticket to someone they know,,,,,,,,

That shouldn't matter though. It is their job. I realize we can't have police in our sub division all the time but it would be nice to see the jerks driving down my street at 70 getting a ticket now and then. No consequences no cares!

One of my friends on the street suggested we all get those yellow "Children at play" signs. At least then drivers would be reminded that there are children out there and maybe slow down.

I must have missed that amendment.
When did yellow signs become more important than the red ones,,,,,,,lol.
The ones speeding and going through stop signs are not going to bother looking for "Children at Play" signs,,,,,I would think,,,,,,,,

Thanks for posting that risky. I guess I will save my money. Maybe a spike strip would be more effective! Smile
