10,000 Jobs in Whitby
Anyone comment on the Toronto Star article today that Whitby will see 10,000 job creations in the "largest mixed use development...in Durham". The mayor, Pat Perkins, was quoted. It says more details in a month.

Sobey's Site
Maybe it's the article that appeared in today's local paper talking about the former Sobey's site being turned into a combination convention centre/theatre/hotel and condos.
I can't find the link for the article just yet - I don't think they posted today's online version yet. Perkins also mentions a church and a school! Not on the other side of Victoria, I hope. Dolstra commented on this. Official announcement is still a few weeks away according to the article. I know the article referred to the diabetes centre, so I assume that it includes the property northwest of Victoria and Seaboard/Jeffery... does it include anything on the east side of Jeffery? How big are they talking? |

RE: 10,000 Jobs in Whitby
If this goes through it would mark South Whitby for sure. Theater, convention center, office, residential buildings, etc.. Throw in future continued development of the waterfront our little place of Whitby Shores would more likely become an even more desirable community.
Love the part about a school. That should happen regardless once the phsych lands are developed (should know June). |

RE: 10,000 Jobs in Whitby
Sobey's is 'apparently' moving out of Whitby for a variety of reasons. I'm not sure if this info has been 'officially' announced, but it seems to be a done deal (from what I've heard).
It would be so great to have those trucks gone and have the site replaced with something that could potentially add to the community and attract some bus./tourism for Whitby. It's such an ideal site, right off the hwy, close to the GO, walk to the waterfront. I know I'm opening things up from those concerned about more traffic in the area to knock me down on this, but I don't care - better cars and more business for Whitby than large transport trucks and an ugly building. Just my opinion... Still can't find that article online...if I don't find it soon, I'll scan it. RE: 10,000 Jobs in Whitby
This would indeed but a great thing for our community. I would really like to see a reduction in the number of trucks on that stretch of Victoria. A performing arts theatre would be fantastic! It could spawn more development towards the lakefront as well which would be nice.

RE: 10,000 Jobs in Whitby
I think that it is somewhat unrealistic to think that the number of trucks will decrease on Victoria. Even if/when Sobey's moves, someone else will move into that warehouse. Also, as long as GM continues to produce in Oshawa, there will be trucks shuttling parts along that section of road.
I agree that some form of theatre would be very nice for our neighbourhood, and look forward to it, but I'm not going to hold my breath until I actually see shovels in the ground and construction starting. Too many times, these pipe dreams have never come to be reality. |
