Toronto garbage strike - Durham consequences
I heard on CBC radio this morning that strikers at a waster transfer station in Toronto were telling residents to leave, and directing them to Pickering to dispose of waste.

Would it not be prudent for our transfer station to start checking for proof of residency immediately?

Since they charge for this service they'll probably welcome them with open arms. Especially if they go to the facility that is contracted.

RE: Toronto garbage strike - Durham consequences
Considering we send the bulk of our garbage to Michigan via an unending caravan of garbage trucks (shame on us), it might be a tad hypocritical to turn away Toronto residents just because they don't live in our region. If they're willing to make the trek to Pickering and pay the dumping fee, who are we to criticize or deny them? Plus, a lot of us work in Toronto so they've had to deal with our garbage for years (all of those take-out containers add up you know).

Have to agree with sretav and Mancubus on this one. Miller will probably love the extra traffic. The city is already starting to stink. If this heat keeps up and with the Pride parade this weekend things are going to be pretty ripe next week!

Jabber.

Isn't it ironic that the city workers always wait until the heat of summer to have a garbage strike. Coincidence I think not. Dirty tactics to hold a city hostage and get what they want, definitely!

Their demands aren't even reasonable. How can you expect to 'bank' 18 sick days per year?! Most people don't even get that many days vacation! If it were up to me I would fire them all and just contract the whole operation.

RE: Toronto garbage strike - Durham consequences
Looking back they should have never asked for something as stupid as banking 18 sick days a year. Now it's going to screw them. Somebody was smart at the city when they agreed to that instead of giving them a better hourly wage. They gave them something they could take away later because it sounds so ridiculous.

I've had 35 years of "18 sick days in the bank",,,,doesn't sound stupid to me,for some reason,,,,,,,

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER,,,YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM

I dont like how these govt workers get 4 wks of sick leave but hey if it was me,,,,i wouldnt argue. Hell I am sick right now coughing away at work when I should be home but I dont get paid so thats why i am here. My dad retired 2 and & 1/2 yrs early with sick pay and personal days he never took. Now thats crazy!!!

I think people should be happy at the great job they have and what others around them are dealing with isnt even 1/10th!!!

Well the unions bankrupted GM with their crazy demands over the years, now everyone is suffering. They need to understand that during an economic downturn city revenues drop big time, less housing permits, less tax revenue, more social services...

Let's be on the lookout for illegal dumping:
